Dublin Event Guide 932: Unmissable Moments – Earth Rising Festival, Richmond Barrack Harvest Fair, Bohemia Flea Market, Culture Night
Unmissable Moments

Earth Rising Festival, Richmond Barrack Harvest Fair, Bohemia Flea Market, Culture Night
Hi!!
Culture Night is back this Friday and if you have never experienced it before, this is the year to dive in. From 17:00 until late, the city will be buzzing with free events across every corner of Dublin. Museums, galleries, theatres and hidden cultural gems will throw open their doors and welcome curious visitors for an evening of exploration and surprise. And with a dry forecast promised, it’s the perfect night to stroll through the streets and soak it all in.
The official Culture Night website at www.culturenight.ie lists hundreds of events, but some of the most memorable experiences happen in the unexpected places. Ever fancied attending a silent disco in a historic church? St Andrew’s Church on Suffolk Street will host one, complete with glow sticks and DJs. Or how about watching live mural painting in Smithfield, where artists will transform blank walls into colourful masterpieces before your eyes?
Or how about watching live mural painting in Smithfield, where artists will transform blank walls into colourful masterpieces before your eyes?
Or head to Merrion Square Park after dark where a Halloween-themed light installations will give you a spooky glimpse of the coming season. There’s even a vintage double-decker bus offering pop-up performances as it tours the city centre!
With so much happening, it can be tempting to rush from venue to venue, but part of the charm of Culture Night is letting the evening unfold naturally. Wander, linger, discover and share – whether you plan your route or go with the flow, you’ll find yourself swept up in a night where culture feels alive and welcoming.
We still have a whole weekend and week before next Friday, but do check out the Culture Night website already because while all events are free, a good few need registration.
If you have friends or family or colleagues that also enjoy cultural events in Dublin, let them know that they can sign up for the free weekly Dublin Event Guide newsletter at getthislink.com/DEGSignup

Donations in September:
EUR 76
(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)
If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.
The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.
This week a whole range of wonderful people helped with donations. They were Sheila, Claire, Olwyn, Jana, Malwina. Thank you so so much!
Step by step we are coming closer to the EUR 200 that are needed again this month. Two more weekends this month, so we really need EUR 62 each week. It doesn’t sound like a huge amount, but YOU are needed to help so that we get there! Don’t rely on others.
With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.
Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.
To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)
In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)
To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG
And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?
Thank you!!

Please note: To speed up the creation of the weekday section of the Dublin Event Guide, I am experimenting with a few minor changes. One is that I am not adding the full address of the venue to all events anymore (for now). If you don’t know where the venue is, you will find it by checking the event link.

+++ Families Pay, Exhibitors Pay — Why Is “Higher Options” Double-Charging?
This week, the Irish Times Higher Options event takes over the RDS from Wednesday until Friday. The organisers proudly expect 30,000 students to attend. Each student pays EUR 12.50 for the privilege, that’s EUR 375,000 from ticket sales alone. Add EUR 1,490 + VAT per exhibitor (about 150 of them) and you realise this is not just a career fair, it’s a serious money-spinner.
Now compare that with similar events in other European countries:
+ The European Education Fair in Paris? Free.
+ The Days of International Education in the Baltics? Free.
+ UCAS fairs in the UK? Free.
So why are Irish families paying for something their peers abroad get without charge?
For households with more than one teenager, the cost is eye-watering. Education shouldn’t be treated like a luxury add-on!
Luckily, there are alternatives to this Irish Times event in the RDS:
+ Free open days at every Irish university and college.
+ Apprenticeship.ie and your local ETB for trades and training.
+ CAO, Qualifax, CareersPortal — all free, comprehensive and accessible.
Do you agree that guidance for life-shaping decisions for students should be accessible to all, not just to those who can afford an RDS ticket? higheroptions.irishtimes.com |
+++ After Light: These Dark Citizens – Explore Dublin’s Hidden Stories
There are Guided Walk for “After Light: These Dark Citizens” on Culture Night, but even if you miss it that night, you can still experience it for a whole month afterwards, at any time of day or night. Created by Peter Power and the Sparsile Collective, this immersive audio walk transforms the Liberties and surrounding streets of Dublin 8 into a living story.
All you need is a smartphone, headphones and the free app that you find at Echoes DOT xyz (if I wrote the address the way you normally write a web address, then spam filters would stop the newsletter because DOT xyz domains are for some reason seen as untrustworthy). Once you step into the area and launch the walk, the app uses GPS to trigger layers of sound, voices and music that respond to your movements. Every participant’s journey is unique. You decide which streets to wander, how long to linger and what hidden paths to follow.
The main route takes about an hour, but the experience is open-ended: walk slowly, take detours and let the atmosphere of the city guide you. It’s best done with headphones and a fully charged phone and while you can go alone, many find it even more powerful to share the experience with friends.
Part audio drama, part urban exploration, After Light: These Dark Citizens reveals the unseen lives, histories and tensions of the city through sound. Just bring your curiosity and let Dublin itself tell the story. The most extensive description is here: www.eventbrite.com/e/1597754981159

Every week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. If you are interested, check them out here cultureclubdublin.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows (This week you only see a few, because every month a new batch is uploaded not in a rolling way, but in a month by month way.)
